| October sunset over Mission Bay, San Diego. One way I enjoy life is by hitting the pause button and taking in natural beauty like this. Another way is by doing completely random shit. |
Now and then I hear something that just resonates and sticks with me. Usually when something is stuck in my head it's in the form of a bad pop song (Nicki Minaj, I'm looking at you), but sometimes it's a tidbit of sagacity instead. At present, I'm going through the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) -- or in other words, I'm finally getting confirmed in the Catholic Church because I fell off the religion wagon at the ripe old age of 5 (thanks Mom and Dad!) -- and last week's class speaker shared a quote I found particularly insightful.
"Just because you are not yet dead,
is not sufficient proof that you are alive."
With the busy schedules we juggle and the obligations we all must face at some level, remember to take a deep breath every now and then and remember that YOU are here for a reason and for a purpose. And you need to have fun along the way! This is your life- at the end, what do you want the highlights reel to look like? In American culture, many people appear to be living, when in reality they merely exist. Are you living to work, or working to live?
Or perhaps you're coasting- whether it be at work, in your relationships, or in general. But what's the fun in that? Granted, I am a bit more adventurous than the typical person thanks to ADHD and an insatiable appetite for new experiences- I mean, how many people do you know who would go to a U2 concert with three middle aged dudes they just met in a bar? (Quick sidenote: Dennis texted me Monday to tell me that he had a 4th ticket to the Foo Fighters show in San Fran tonight. I'd already cashed in my frequent flyer miles for a flight over Christmas, but otherwise, you'd better believe I'd be at the airport instead of blogging right now.)
To me, spontaneity and going outside a very large comfort zone are at the crux of my humanity. So push yourself to explore and live outside the box when you can. As the great Ferris Bueller once said, "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."
